Show Me a Hero
A story about a housing project probably doesn't sound exciting or worth 6 hours of your time. But with Paul Haggis and David Simon it ended up being one of the best of the year. It was a story I never heard of but it is important to us all. It spoke to themes of race, economic class, American politics, and the politicians themselves. Like most of Simon's work, it presents these people as human and complex. They all have their faults but it is never really judgemental. The cast certainly helped with that with Winona Ryder, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, and Catherine Keener all being compelling to watch. At the center though, was always Oscar Isaac as the young mayor. This isn't an easy character to like but Isaac and the filmmakers help you understand him. You see just how politics affects a human being and what it does to those around them. I didn't always really like him but I loved every minute he was on screen. Not a lot of people watched this, so I highly recommend everyone check it out. Even if the themes don't interest you, the performances and the emotions you will feel will certainly compel you.

The Drop
Didn't know what to expect when I saw the trailers, and it ended up being one of the best crime dramas in a long time. Wonderful performances from every cast member and pitch perfect pacing. Also, the most underrated movie of this year too.
